The body of former President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived in Katsina, his native state, for burial.
This occurred shortly after President Bola Tinubu touched down in Katsina State ahead of the burial proceedings.
Meanwhile, a prominent delegation from the Republic of Niger also arrived in Katsina on Tuesday morning to take part in the final funeral events of the late Nigerian ex-leader, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in London after a long illness.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also confirmed his presence at the event.
“I just arrived in Daura for the interment of former President Muhammadu Buhari,” he posted on X.
Wizopa previously revealed that arrangements for Buhari’s burial were nearly complete, with his grave already prepared in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
The late President’s body, transported aboard a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) jet, was accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and other top government functionaries.
Wizopa also learned that nearly all the leading hotels in Katsina city have been fully occupied since Monday, as dignitaries including government officials, diplomats, senior military personnel, and political associates arrive in large numbers for the high-level state funeral.
A significant security presence has also been observed throughout Katsina, especially in Daura. Armoured vehicles, armed soldiers, DSS operatives, and anti-riot police have been positioned at key points, including the roads leading to Buhari’s Daura residence and hotels hosting prominent guests.
Earlier, First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio had also made their way to Katsina.
Wizopa had earlier noted that the initial burial schedule, which planned for Buhari’s return to Nigeria on Monday, had to be adjusted due to delays from London.
Bashir Ahmad confirmed the change on Monday, indicating that the late President’s remains would now arrive around noon on Tuesday, with the funeral prayers and final burial scheduled for 2:00 PM the same day in Daura.
The Federal Government had also declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the former President, allowing Nigerians—especially in the North-West—to take part in or witness the burial ceremonies.
Buhari, a native of Daura, was Nigeria’s military ruler from January 1984 to August 1985, before becoming a civilian President from 2015 to 2023.
Although some admired him for his frugal lifestyle and reputation for integrity, his administration was also plagued by controversies, including accusations of human rights abuses, killings of Shiite Muslims and other groups, persistent insecurity, economic struggles, and claims of nepotism.
