Residents have criticised the Lagos State government’s handling of yet another tragedy in Ikorodu, where water erosion swept through homes, displacing families, destroying property, and leaving many stranded without shelter or guidance.
According to them, what should have prompted an immediate emergency intervention from the authorities was instead met with an unexpected and dismissive remark from the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, who told those affected to “vacate the area.” “The erosion crisis in Ikorodu is not new. Locals have raised complaints for years. Environmental experts have issued warnings. Professionals have proposed remedies. Yet, minimal or no action has followed. Drainage systems remain blocked, urban planning is disregarded, and emergency readiness is almost absent in most Lagos suburbs. Each rainy season brings the same cycle—flooding, displacement, and silence from leadership.
“Rather than showing compassion and outlining an emergency action plan, the public was met with an unfeeling directive to leave.
That is not leadership; it is a neglect of responsibility,” the residents remarked.
They went on to call on the state government to deliver emergency aid and temporary accommodation, supply food, clean water, medical services, and bedding to those affected, conduct a swift environmental review, and extend direct assistance.
“Such a reaction, they said, is not only highly disappointing but also highlights administrative failure and a lack of sensitivity towards the struggles of ordinary Lagosians.
“This situation is more than a natural disaster; it is also a sign of governance breakdown under the APC-led administration in Lagos State,” the residents asserted.
“If officials are instructing people to leave their homes, where exactly are they meant to go? Are they being told to move to the king’s palace, the mayor’s residence, the police barracks, or simply into the streets? Directing citizens to vacate without providing relocation plans, shelter, or aid is not governance; it is abandonment.
