Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim stated that only results can silence his critics ahead of the Premier League clash with Sunderland, a match that could determine his future.
Since his arrival at Old Trafford last November, Amorim has collected just 34 points from 33 league matches.
Failing to overcome newly promoted Sunderland, who currently sit fifth in the standings, could be the final straw for United’s board, especially with a two-week international break approaching.
After finishing 15th last season — their lowest league finish since the 1974 relegation — United backed Amorim with over £200 million ($269 million) in transfers. Yet, improvement has been hard to find, with the team stuck in 14th after six games.
“You cannot run away from the results, and then you have the baggage from the last season,” Amorim said at his pre-match press conference on Friday.
“The last season for me, it doesn’t matter.”
His insistence on sticking with a 3-4-3 formation has drawn criticism from pundits, including former United captain Gary Neville and record goalscorer Wayne Rooney.
The 40-year-old stressed there was no point responding to critics publicly, as only results could safeguard his job.
“It’s not time to say, it’s time to show,” he explained. “The games in this year for me are completely different.
“We show that in some games. In other games, we are not the same team in some details.
“I have nothing to say in this moment. My job is to prepare the team, and let’s go for the next game.”
Before kick-off at Old Trafford, United will wear black armbands and hold a minute’s silence in tribute to two people killed in an attack on a Manchester synagogue on Thursday.
“Of course, our sympathy is for the victims,” said Amorim. “We will pay tribute tomorrow, but it’s a crazy world at this moment.”
