The Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos was once again thrown into chaos on Sunday as suspected rival cult groups engaged in violent clashes, resulting in the death of two people.
This latest attack came less than a week after three people were brutally murdered during a masquerader festival in the same area — killings that police had earlier attributed to cult violence.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, had on Tuesday announced increased security patrols across Lekki, Ajah, Ogombo, and Elemoro.
A 19-second video, seen by Ebelenaija on the Telegram page of Naija Confra on Monday, showed one of the victims lying lifeless in the back of a white moving police van.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said, “We have seen several kinds of killings in this area.
“Just after the first killing on Sunday, another person was killed. His hand was cut off by the cultists.”
Additional disturbing footage and photos confirmed the brutality of the attacks.
One image obtained by Ebelenaija showed a victim with deep machete cuts to the face and severe injuries to the right wrist, his body sprawled beside a motorcycle drenched in blood.
When contacted on Monday, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Lagos Police Command, Babaseyi Oluseyi, told Ebelenaija to send a message to him. However, he had not yet responded as of the time of filing this report.
The latest killings echo a spate of cult-related attacks across Lagos. In Ikorodu, a man was recently hacked to death with his wrist and leg severed.
Less than 24 hours later, five bodies were recovered from the Oreta riverbank, which police also linked to cult violence.
Jimoh confirmed in a Saturday interview with Ebelenaija that over 26 suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the ongoing violence.
The command had also disclosed last Tuesday that some Divisional Police Officers in areas affected by cult activity had been redeployed to strengthen operational efficiency and ensure quicker responses to distress calls.
